Addressing antimicrobial resistance through smart architecture and urban planning

  19 December 2024

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern due to the improper use of antimicrobial medicines, such as antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals. The emergence and spread of AMR are linked to the environment, and understanding and addressing environmental and social determinants of health is crucial for controlling it. People in vulnerable living situations are often neglected in AMR efforts. Public health interventions can enhance living conditions for all members of society, promoting infection prevention and a healthy lifestyle. Urban housing can act as a reservoir for AMR pathogens, exposing people to health risks, including hard-to-treat infectious diseases. Improving housing conditions is an important public health intervention to decrease the burden of infections and reduce the need for antibiotics.
